International or expatriate assignments are a crucial strategy for multinational companies in expanding market reach and utilizing resources throughout the world. However, approximately 30% to 50% of these international assignments fail, which can have a negative impact on both the individual and the organization. This research aims to identify the main factors that influence the success and failure of expatriates through a systematic review of existing literature. Using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, this research found that cultural intelligence, social support, and thorough preparation are key factors that determine success. Apart from that, personal problems and support from family also have a significant contribution to the expatriate experience. The findings from this research provide practical guidance for international management in designing more effective and sustainable assignment strategies.
